CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland fans witnessed history at Progressive Field on Monday, as the Indians played their final home game under the name they've gone by for more than a century.

The team is changing its name to the Guardians in 2022.

Longtime Valley Indians fans Joe and Jill Cole say they've gone to countless games together. They even traveled to watch Spring Training in Arizona.

"I'm not real happy about it," Joe Cole said, of Boardman. "I don't think we'll buy new gear, but we'll come to the games."

Jill Cole was carrying a handmade sign that read 'Final Indians Home Game EVER!', with a sad face on the bottom. She was like several fans who told us this was a sad day for them.

"I think the Indians fans are very loyal," she said. "It'll be something that takes time to get used to, but I think they'll still be here."

Some fans might be tough to convince.

"This is what I was born and raised with," Kelley Uber said, of Willoughby. "I don't think they should change the name."

"I'm very, very, disappointed in that," Steve Olie said. "I think we caved to a very small minority and they'll always be the Indians."

While you may still see fans wearing Indians logos next season.

The franchise banned headdresses and face paint following the decision to drop Chief Wahoo from its logo in 2019.

Indians fans can still wear the Wahoo logo inside Progressive Field and it's expected some will wear their current team gear, jerseys and hats next season.

In addition to a new name, a local, county and state deal was reached to make more than $400 million in stadium upgrades at Progressive Field.

The Indians will play five more games away to round out the rest of the season on the road.
