After previously announcing that they would discontinue maternity and obstetrics services by December 31, Sharon Regional Medical Center will now close services for non-emergencies by Wednesday September 29.

The medical center says the decision comes from recent operational considerations.

Patients who want to access or transfer their medical records can contact the center's records department or access them on the hospital's website.

"Sharon Regional is deeply committed to the well-being of our patients and community and will continue to offer many specialized women's health services including gynecology and 3D mammography," the medical center said in a statement.

The original choice to stop services came when Sharon Regional Medical Center evaluated their demographics and determined that Mercer County accounts for less than one percent of the annual births in Pennsylvania.

Sharon Regional also says they have informed all appropriate local agencies about the decision.
