Youngstown community advocate, Victoria Allen, receives statewide award
A Youngstown woman who was an advocate for thousands of people in her community received a special award from the state, Tuesday, just a week after her passing.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost presented the 'Ohio Distinguished Law Enforcement Civilian Leadership Award' to the family of Victoria Allen at a special ceremony inside the Covelli Centre.
The honor is given to one person each year to recognize someone in the state who dedicates themselves to help serve the community by working with local police.
"Usually this is presented at the annual Law Enforcement conference in Columbus but given the immense contribution she made to this community we wanted to come to Youngtsown and present it to her family," said AG Yost.
Vicki was known for her ability to rally and organize massive events like easter egg hunts, hat and coat drives, holiday giveaways and block watches.
"I don't know who is going to fill that space," said Mayor Tito Brown. "It's not going to be be just one, all of us in this room might not be able to fill that space!"
Vicki's three daughters say they were very touched by the award and the outpouring of support.
"It means to much. It's a lot. It's unexplainable," said Ashanti Allen.
"She always put everybody first," said Kendra Allen. "Her community, the kids, the officers. She just had a kind heart."
"My hope is it inspires people to continue this. I've heard so many stories about how she has touched them I hope they take that and use that to plant a seed for somebody else," said Ashley Robinson.
Calling Hours for Victoria Allen will be held from 9:30am-11am Thursday September 30th at New Bethel Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11am.
