COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio - The Mahoning Valley is in the Hollywood spotlight.

Road closures started this morning after ODOT permitted both Salem and Perry Township to become scenes for a Netflix movie.

Perry Township Police Chief Mike Emigh said the film is called "Wheat Germ" starring actor Adam Driver.

"If I am correct, it is based on a novel, White Noise. It has to do with a train derailment with gases leaking," Emigh said, "Just like any movie when it comes, it should bring an income into the city of Salem as well as the township."

U.S. Route 62 and State Route 45 bypass between North Ellsworth Avenue and State Route 14 is closed for the next couple of weeks, as well as a section of the bypass from Jennings Avenue and Goshen Road.

Detour signs are posted with Salem and Perry Township police patrolling the area, and are being paid to provide security for the production.

"Basically all we're doing here is making sure nobody comes through the barricade or tries to sneak their way into the settings," he said, "I would suggest especially with trucks, probably avoid the area because it will not be an easy-going, seeing how you'll have to go through the city for most of it, and that causes a lot of congestion."

The crew is setting up and production is set to start in the coming days.

Local residents said they hope the movie brings more attention to family-owned businesses that lost revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic.
