CORTLAND, Ohio - Mosquito Lake will soon be given a new master plan through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District.

The new plan aims to improve the areas recreation, natural and cultural resources. The master plan has not been revamped since 1994.

On Thursday evening, U.S. Army Corps officials laid out their goals of the plan that include using sound environmental principles to protect and enhance public lands.

"Developing an invasive species management plan or updating our efficient wildlife management plan," explained Heather Wood, Natural Resource Specialist and Master Plan Lead.

There's also an effort to cultivate volunteers and partnerships and apply for grants.

"Some examples include having student conservation associations work at our projects, do surveys for us, programming or inventory," Wood added.

The plan also includes an effort to develop more connections benefiting the park.

"Maybe we want to have weather alert systems at some of our busy day use areas in case of adverse weather or high water notifications," Wood said.

The U.S. Army Corps' finals idea is to leverage emerging technology to enhance visitor experiences.

"Having some sort of application to allow people to use maps and other documentation relative to the lake," Wood explained. "Advertising the events that we have around the lake and how can we share our success stories."

People in the Mosquito Lake community also offered thoughts including bettering the sewage runoff, bike trail safety, park maintenance, cleanliness and even adding in more housing and restaurants to the community.
