Infectious disease specialist discusses COVID-19 booster shots
The CDC has recommended COVID-19 booster shots for those aged 65 and older or 18 and older who meet certain conditions.
Local health officials are awaiting guidance from the FDA but are anticipating some of those guidelines.
"What we know preliminarily, is that the FDA will more than likely recommend that it is okay to mix and match vaccines," said Dr. Dee Banks, an infectious disease specialist.
In terms of which booster might be the most effective, Dr. Banks referenced a study done by the National Institutes of Health.
"They looked at giving a, another booster dose of J and J to those people who already had the booster and their antibody titles only went up about 4 fold," explained Dr. Banks. "But when they gave the J and J people the Moderna, it went up to 76 fold. You do the math."
Dr. Banks says guidance from the FDA will come out on Wednesday.
