Before the weather turns cold, here are some tips to protect your plants ahead of the first freeze.

Experts at Elliott Garden Center suggest:

  • Covering your plants. They say to use cardboard or a sheet to insulate the plant. They say, do not use plastic because this will only "intensify the cold.

  • All plants need a thorough watering before the weather changes. They say this helps prevent the plant's root system from drying out especially if we experience a harsh winter with extremely cold temperatures.

  • "Put your garden to bed:" This includes picking up any debris, dead heading Hydrangeas, and mulching over plants, such as roses, to insulate the root system. This will help ensure a more successful garden come spring.
