Youngstown City council approves raise for city firefighters
Youngstown City council voted to raise the salary of the city's firefighters.
Youngstown City council voted to raise the salary of the city's firefighters.
The new contract for the firefighters was discussed Monday, October 18 during the city council meeting, and was approved Wednesday, October 20.
The contract includes the first raise that the firefighters have seen in 7 years, and will include salary increases yearly for new firefighters.
The department has been facing staffing issues because of the lack of pay, and has had to close certain stations temporarily because of the lack of firefighters. The city is hoping that this salary increase will help the department maintain its current crew, and attract new comers.
The firefighters salary will be increased by 11,000 dollars, going from 26,000 dollars to 37,000 starting salary.
The city has been debating this salary increase over various meetings, and more information on the increase can be found here.
