Bear returns trash can to upright position before leaving North Jackson home
NORTH JACKSON, Ohio - A Black Bear spent about a half hour nosing around a North Jackson family home in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Tammy Brancaccio said her husband, Brian, checked their security cameras after he noticed something must have been nosing around their trash cans.
The family expected to see a raccoon, instead they were shocked to see a Black Bear.
The home security cameras show the bear visiting their front porch, and digging trough their trash. The bear can be seen pulling the trash can over, digging around, and then returning the trash can to it's upright position before heading back out into the darkness.
The Brancaccios say the bear spent about a half hour on their property.
Their home is located near State Route 45 and Mahoning Avenue. The Brancaccios have warned their neighbors of the bear spotting.
ODNR says there are ways to bear-proof your backyard to prevent any potential interactions with the animal.
Removing bird feeders, moving trash cans and pet food inside or to a garage, and cleaning grease from grills are some ways to lessen the chance of encountering the bear.
Black bears are usually afraid of humans and attacks are rare. ODNR says bears do not attack children or pets as long as they are given space and are not cornered.
If you do encounter the bear, act calm and talk in a firm calm voice to let them know you are near. Keep space between yourself and the bear and back away slowly.
