STONEBORO, Pa. - A Mercer County woman fell victim to an adoption scam on Facebook, according to State Police.

The 38-year-old woman from Stoneboro told investigators that she was led to believe she could adopt a daughter in exchange for sending the scammers information from prepaid purchase cards.

The police report does not say how much money the woman lost in the scam.

While Facebook has published tips about avoiding pet adoption scams, an internet search did not turn up information about child adoption scams.

Consumer experts remind people to never give a prepaid debit card serial number to anyone they don’t know. Giving them your serial number is as good as giving them cash. If someone asks for your serial number or information from your purchase receipt, it’s a good indication that a scam is involved.
