A major water leak has closed the Youngstown Police Department to the public, and part of Boardman Steet to traffic.

A burst water line flooded several floors of the Police Department at around 4 a.m. Monday.

Police say Boardman Street is closed between Market St. and Hazel this week. Local traffic to offices on Boardman Street is being permitted. However, it is closed as a “through street”.

Heavy equipment is being moved to the street by city workers.

This closure was discussed among Police, Building, and Engineering officials and it was decided that it is necessary for crews to clean up and repair extensive damage incurred to the Police Department by the bursting of a pipe on Monday morning.

In addition, the Police Department is closed to the public until repairs are complete.

Police and non-sworn personnel must still report, said Cheif Detective J. Simon in a statement.

The 911 Center is in service and no police operations will be affected, said Simon.

Police reported the leak on the third or fourth floor of their department, with one officer likening it to Niagara Falls.

A viewer emailed a video to 21 News showing water dripping through the ceiling and light fixtures onto the floor of the hallway outside the former municipal courtrooms.

Water could also be seen dripping from the ceiling above the Boardman Street entrance to the Police Department.

Officers have been told not to park in the police garage.
