A recently created holiday for federal workers is now an official holiday for workers in the City of Youngstown.

City Council on Wednesday voted to add the June 19th occasion to the city’s existing eleven legal holidays which include New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, as well as a personal day.

Under the legislation, when the holiday falls on a Saturday, it would be observed on a Friday. If it falls on Sunday, as it will next year, Juneteenth will be observed on the following Monday.

Employees required to work legal holidays in Youngstown receive their regular hourly pay, as well as premium pay equal to one and three-quarters the amount of their regular pay.

President Biden signed legislation last Spring officially declaring Juneteenth as a Federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the United States.
