BOARDMAN, Ohio - Mahoning County Public Health is partnering with Southern Park Mall to distribute Narcan Wednesday.

The distribution will be held at Center Court in the Southern Park Mall from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

According to the release, the holidays can be stressful to people with substance use disorders and can lead to an increased risk of an opiate overdose.

Narcan is used during an overdose to block the effects of opioids on the brain and restore breathing.

Health officials say Narcan is a non-controlled drug and has no potential for abuse. If it is given to a person when they are not experiencing an opioid overdose, the drug is harmless.

Mahoning County had 131 unintentional overdose deaths in 2020, with fentanyl involved in 85% of them. A dose of just a few milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal, which is why health officials say to carry Narcan.
