The Ohio State Highway Patrol is once again reminding motorists to drive sober over the holidays.

Troopers reported 10 fatal crashes which resulted in 12 people being killed between December 24 and December 27, 2020. Ten of those deaths happened inside vehicles with seat belts, but the state reported that nine of those passengers were not buckled in.

"As usual, we expect traffic to pick up as holiday celebrations begin, and being responsible when traveling to and from holiday gatherings is key to everyone's safety," said Governor DeWine. "Please don't forget to wear your seat belt, and if you plan on drinking, please designate a driver."

The patrol made an additional 145 OVI arrests during the same four day "holiday reporting" period.

This years period will be from December 24 through December 27.

"Designating a sober driver is the smartest decision motorists can make," said Colonel Richard S. Fambro. "Ensuring everyone's safety while traveling on Ohio's roadways is our priority."

The State Highway Patrol is encouraging motorists to report impaired drivers and drug activity by calling #677.
