1996: Gary Kaatz, CEO of the Western Reserve Care System, says the Cleveland Clinic has missed a golden opportunity to make an inroad into the Mahoning Valley. Kaatz says the WRCS is turning to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for cardiac surgery.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the spill of 200 gallons of xylene, a cleaning agent, on the East Side of East Liverpool.
Twenty five students in the Warren Harding High School International Baccalaureate program will make a five-day trip to Washington, D.C., which will include attending the inauguration of President Bill Clinton.
1981: The Mahoning County grand jury issues negative reports on conditions in both the City Jail and County Jail, city Youngstown's lockup for a "stench on the fourth floor and the booking area (that was) sickening."
At least two teams of purse-snatchers preyed on women Christmas shoppers in New Castle's downtown shopping district.
Lawrence County, Pa., District Attorney-elect William Panella leaves a meeting with the salary board without an agreement. Panella said he will have no assistants when he takes office because none will work for the salaries offered of $10,500 to $15,000. Board member Frank Vitril said he will not be pressured into approving raises by Panella's argument that the office might not be able to prosecute murder cases within speedy trial requirements.
1971: Dr. E.C. Baker, Dr. William Evans, and Dr. Richard H. Middleton are honored by the Mahoning County Medical Society for 50 years of service.
Open Roads Industries, which converts Lordstown-built vans into recreational vehicles, plans to double its operations at the Lordstown Ordnance Depot.
Rudy Vazmina of Girard, All-American in the butterfly event, begins his fourth year on the Ashland College swim team.
1946: A police patrol-wagon crew visits four of Youngstown's disabled veterans, delivering and erecting Christmas trees.
Seven more men are arrested in a payroll-padding scheme at Republic Steel Corp., bringing to 13 the number of arrests since a Youngstown accounting clerk was arrested a week ago.
