After reports of expired COVID tests, health officials explain FDA extension

You may have noticed some of the rapid COVID tests local health departments have handed out recently appear to be expired.
One that a viewer sent us has an expiration date from March of this year.
The Trumbull County Health Department says the FDA extended the expiration period on those by six months, but that still would've meant they expired in September. Trumbull County health officials say they don't have anymore of those tests.
The Mahoning County Health Department handed the Abbott tests out earlier this year and are waiting to hear about more extensions.
They distributed roughly 5,000 tests two weeks ago that expire in May 2022.
Health commissioner Ryan Tekac says the department will be passing more tests out to county libraries next Monday.
Warren city deputy health commissioner John May tells 21 News that the Abbott tests pictured in this story have been granted a 12-month extension by the FDA.
