The world's loss of Betty White is turning into a push to support animals in the Valley- as people donate to animal shelters and rescues in White's memory.

Fans of the White are organizing on social media to pay tribute to the beloved actress by calling for donations to animal shelters on January 17th.

It's called the 'Betty White Challenge.'

January 17th marks what would have been White's 100th birthday.

The beloved actress was well-known for her love of animals. She worked with zoos, advocated for animals, and had many pets of her own.

The challenge calls for $5 donations to be made to an animal shelter or rescue of the donor's choice, in White's honor.

However, local animal shelters are already seeing donations roll in.

"We've already received $225 in 'Betty White' donations so far," said Lori Shandor of the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.

Meanwhile, Angels for Animals and the Columbiana County Humane Society have each received at least one donation, but anticipate more in the coming days.

Angels for Animals will put the donations toward their 'Feline Fix Fest,' where the community can purchase a $20 voucher to get their cats neutered or spayed. The vouchers will be available beginning Monday, January 10th at the Angels for Animals office.

As for the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County, Shandor says "the money will be used to support the animals in our care. It costs a lot to feed, shelter and medicate our animals. The average cost is $350 per dog."

The Columbiana County Humane Society says their donations will go toward a general fund, much of which pays for medical care as there is not an on-site veterinarian.

Though the challenge suggests a $5 donation on the 17th, the shelters encourage people to give what they can, whenever they can. There is no monetary limit or time specification to when these shelters accept donations. All donations are appreciated.

"God bless Betty, she was a heck of a lady," said Angels for Animal's Diane Less.
