Canfield vigil to remember January 6th fallen officers on Thursday

CANFIELD TWP., Ohio - One year after supporters of the former President stormed the U.S. Capitol in an effort to stop the certification of the 2020 Election results, a candlelight vigil will be held in canfield to remember the police officers who lost their lives that day.
The community is invited to meet behind the Canfield Library at 5:30 p.m. Thursday to take part in a procession to the gazebo on the village green for the service.
Several members of the U.S. Capitol Police lost their lives as a result of the insurrection.
Ron Cabuno, the event organizer and host of the Mahoning County Daily Podcast, says that this day is not political; it is to honor the members of law enforcement who lost their lives defending the Capitol.
"This is about keeping the date in the public framework," says Cabuno. "Just remembering what happened that day."
Speakers including Pastor Ivy Smith of Canfield United Methodist Church and the Canfield Police Chief Chuck Colucci will deliver remarks commemorating the bravery of the officers involved, followed by the playing of Taps.
Cabuno says the peaceful transfer of power is a key principle of democracy. That's why remembering the events of January 6th is so important to him.
"There are a lot of battles to be fought on a day-to-day basis just to keep democracy alive to ensure the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to the next," Cabuno said.
Cabuno is hoping for 30 to 50 people to attend.
"If we get more than that, I'll be ecstatic," Cabuno said.
Since the insurrection, there have been 725 arrests, 158 guilty pleas, and 57 convictions. Five of those arrests consist of people from the Valley, who are still awaiting sentencing or a trial.
Masks are optional for those vaccinated. Candles will be provided.
