The pain at the pump isn't going away as gas prices are continuing to see a steady rise in Northeast Ohio, according to a new report from AAA.

AAA calculates that prices for the current week are averaging $3.12 per gallon across the region, a 13 cent increase from last week.

In Youngstown, current prices are averaging $3.08 at local gas stations.

AAA said that the current high price of oil is to blame, cashing in at roughly $80 a barrel.

The Energy Information Administration said that gasoline went down in demand last week, from nearly 10 million barrels around Christmas to just over 8 million barrels following New Year's. Meanwhile, domestic gas stock went up by 10 million barrels last week.

According to AAA, price increases can also be attributed to the fact that pump prices usually decline due to lower gas demand and a rise in total stocks, but continued growth in the price of oil has helped to elevate pump prices.

Last week, contract pricing fluctuations changed due to the new year, plus demand concerns over the COVID-19 omicron variant led to prices increasing overall amid conflict around oil in Central Asia.

The current national average for a gallon of gas is $3.30. That's three cents less than last month's average but $1.01 more than a year ago.
