A Warren man is in jail after his mother told police that he kicked the family dog for chewing up a device charger, then allegedly ran his mother’s car into a pole.

Tyler Kelly, 22, is scheduled for arraignment in Warren Municipal Tuesday on charges of animal cruelty, DUI, driving with a suspended license, and disregarding safety while operating a motor vehicle.

Kelly’s mother told police that she heard her dog whimpering in her home Monday night and believed that Kelly had kicked the animal.

The mom said her son told her he had become angry with the dog for chewing his new $125 charger.

The 47-year-old woman told police that after the two argued, her son grabbed the keys to her Chevy Cobalt and drove away from their home on Maple Street, soon running into a utility pole.

Police couldn’t find the car in the neighborhood, but officers say Kelly later returned home, crying that he injured his shoulder when the car struck the pole.

Kelly wouldn’t give the police the location of the car. Officers followed his footprints in the snow to find the car about a mile away on Deerfield Ave. SW.

Transported to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of his injuries, Kelly refused to undergo OVI tests, according to police.
