CAMPBELL, Ohio - Doctors say vision is absolutely crucial for learning. Unfortunately, many children in the Mahoning Valley don't have access to eye care. That's where charities like Sight for All United come in.

Sight for All United and the United Way, along with Fitz Frames are providing free eye ware to students who need it most in Campbell.

Dr. Sergul Erzurum of Eye Care Associates tells 21 News that children at an elementary school age could have very severe vision-related diseased such as crossed eyes and convergence problems, which could lead to academic failure.

"We all know 80% of our learning happens through our eyesight, and if you can't see, you're not learning very well," Erzurum said.

Erzurum went on to note various warning signs that a student is having trouble with their vision such as squinting, closing one eye to focus or holding their books closer to their eyes.

"Other problems can include poor reading skills, difficulty learning [and] inattention in the classroom," Erzurum continued.

Nicholas Torres of Fitz Frames tells 21 News that even if a child does not have any vision problems, it's still recommended that they wear special glasses to block out damaging blue lights that come from electronic devices.

Over 300 children in Campbell alone have received the gift of good eyesight thanks to these charities.
