With the impending storm bringing in freezing rain on top of the snow that's already here some people worry about all tat weight sitting on their roof.
The weather mix of snow, more snow, then freezing rain has some homeowners worried about the weight of the snow or ice on their roof.
That has some homeowners believing they need to climb on a ladder to remove the snow. The President of Boak & Sons says he and Emergency Room doctors advise against that.
Dozens of phone calls are being made with people requesting that service since they are concerned. Boak & Sons does not provide that service. Sam Boak explained why.
"In our valley the houses have been built for years and years are structurally very sound. I feel very comfortable they can handle the snow loads we just had and what we possibly could be getting," said Boak.
Boak emphasized, "Roofs last 25 to 30 years. They will be able to hold our areas snows unless they have leaked for years and created rotted wood."
Boak also explained that homeowners can create additional problems for their home or building by knocking icicles down.
"We have actually had people who have called us asking can you fix our window because we knocked it and the icicle went right through the window. Because when you knock them they kick," said Boak.
To cut down on formation of icicles people can make sure their gutters are properly sealed and installed, that bathroom fans are vented outside and not vented to the attic. Homeowners can also add insulation in their attic to help
Boak explained if you let icicles melt away, the drip will be better accepted by your footer drains Right now the ground has not thawed.
A check with several local hardware stores shows products meant to remove snow from roofs while you are standing safely on the ground are selling out. Some people have complained they damaged their roof. While other products are advertised as removing snow without causing damage to roofs.
Some websites state snow removal is essential to prevent ice dams, water infiltration, or even roof collapse, but they go on to state most roofs in northern climates are designed to withstand the heaviest of snowfalls.
Their advise if you have a flat, or shallow pitch roof, or concerns, is to consult with a professonal to see if your roof needs repairs.
Boak added, "There are some who will try to do it, but there is no need. I would look at spring and get prepared for next year in case we have snow like that."
