Mahoning Valley afternoon travel update: What to expect if you head out

The Mahoning Valley is under a winter weather advisory and organizations such as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) are advising against any unnecessary travel.
However, if you do need to go out this afternoon, here's what you can expect to encounter according to ODOT.
ODOT Public Information Officer, Justin Chesnic tells 21 News that Mahoning County has mostly seen freezing rain throughout the day.
Chesnic tells us crews have been out since midnight staying ahead of the roads. However, once the freezing rain converts into more snow, it's expected to fall hard and fast for a long period of time.
As a result, road conditions will likely deteriorate for a while. However, since crews were able to stay ahead of the freezing rain, roads will still be in better shape than they would have been if there was a layer of ice underneath.
Chesnic went on to tell us that Trumbull County is mostly the same as Mahoning, but there is more snow in Trumbull, so crews have had to pull double duty a bit more, but crews have been able to stay ahead of roads.
However, Trumbull County residents should still expect tougher conditions as heavier snow begins to fall.
Once that happens, Chenic anticipates roads will be passable, but once one stretch is hit, it generally takes at least 45 minutes to get back to it, so if snow falls fast, there's still plenty of time for roads to get snow covered and slippery.
If you're headed out for an event or to visit a business, be advised that some businesses may be closed and events may be canceled due to the weather.
