With a 36-32 win over Waynedale on Saturday, the South Range wrestling team, which owns the district's top seed, punched their ticket to the State Duals Tournament in Versailles, Ohio. Watch the team celebrate the moment it happened after senior Michael Lally sealed it for the Raiders.
South Range advanced to the State Duals Tournament for the first time ever two years ago, and also advanced last year as an alternate. Saturday's home win over Waynedale saw the Raiders improve to 14-0 in dual meets this season.
Head Coach Dave Markulin is in his first season leading the Raiders, but has been with the program is some variation for the last 22 years, including the last three as the assistant varsity coach.
He says this season's qualification feels different.
"This year we were able to show our stuff and prove that we deserved to be there," he said. "It's just a great group of kids. I've coached most of them since youth and it's been a lot of fun watching them. Our motto is 'relentless attack.' These guys have really stepped it up this year and we have a really good team. We try to prove to everybody this little school from South Range will compete with anybody."
