Youngstown City Council is considering a $86,475 resolution for external defibrillators for every city department.

The cost of the defibrillators will come through ARP funding.

Youngstown Fire Department Chief Barry Finley said that every department and public building should have an external defibrillator in case of a medical emergency.

Last year, Chief Finley addressed the issue of public buildings, specifically city hall not having and defibrillators, and asked department heads if they would be interested in receiving the defibrillators.

All 50 department heads were interested in getting the defibrillators, which led to the consideration.

Chief Finley said that restaurants, bowling alleys and movie theaters all have external defibrillators, so public buildings should have them as well.

"Hundreds of people go into City Hall every day, to pay their water bill, and what would happen if someone went into cardiac arrest? We wouldn't be able to help them, we would just have to stand around waiting for an ambulance," says Chief Finley.

The proposed legislation will be discussed Wednesday, February 16.
