1997: Motorists strike about 1,000 deer a year on roads in Mercer and Lawrence counties and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, which has been criticized for not doing enough to clean up the roadkill, has announced it will hire private contractors to work along state and interstate roads.
 
Training for the first 200 guards at the Corrections Corporation of America private prison in Youngstown began Feb. 3 and the company says they will be ready for duty when the prison opens March 1. On average the new guards will be earning about $6,000 more per year than they did in their previous jobs, the company says. 
 
Caroline McCombs hits the 1,000-point mark for the Youngstown State University basketball Penguins and Liz Hauger breaks the 1,372-point record for the Mid-Continent Conference that had been held by Lori Haskett of Western Illinois. 
 
1982: The General Motors van plant will begin operating on two shifts again in early April, returning 1,000 laid-off employees to their jobs. 
 
The owner of the Red Caboose Teen Center says he will file a $2.5 million suit in U.S. District Court against Bazetta Township for what he says is harassment by the township police department that has caused an 80 percent reduction business.
 
Warren Police Chief Richard Galgozy said complaints by the Rev. Titus Gardner and the Trumbull County Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance have resulted in the opening of an investigation into complaints that one city police officer has brutalized blacks on multiple occasions.

Atty. Joseph Sheban asks Youngstown police to investigate the piecemeal theft of a cement-block airplane hangar from the Watson Airport on Jacobs Road. People apparently took the blocks for use in home projects, as well as the trusses and roofing material. All that is left is the foundation. 
 
1947: The Youngstown YMCA is a vital force against juvenile delinquency, attracting 350 to 450 boys every Saturday morning for gym classes, basketball, swimming, and entertainment. 
 
Youngstown Municipal Airport in Vienna operated in the black in 1946, the first year to show a profit since it opened. 
 
Youngstown motorists will face 15 percent increases in auto insurance, meaning an additional $3.50 to $9 a year per car, depending on the coverage and the driver's age and history.
