An instructor at the Trumbull Career and Technical Center was placed on administrative leave pending a legal investigation after she allegedly assaulted a student.

Cheryl Cornich had been officially placed on leave as of Wednesday afternoon, a TCTC representative said. The school made the decision after they became aware of the alleged incident, which was reported on Tuesday. The representative said that Cornich "improperly disciplined a student." Cornich is a cosmetology instructor at TCTC.

A report filed with the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office said a student came forward with claims that they were approached by Cornich who choked them in a classroom. The student told police that Cornich was so irate that she continued pulling on the students hooded sweatshirt and continued choking them while shouting "I'll do it again."

The student said they tried to throw both of their arms in the air to show other students they were not assaulting Cornich in retaliation, reports said. Cornich allegedly then grabbed the student's right arm to prevent them from signaling to the rest of the classroom.

That's when the student told police they ran away from the classroom to escape Cornich, but that Cornich chased after them.

When Cornich caught the student, police said she grabbed them and got face-to-face. Cornich allegedly told the student that they would not be allowed to have friends at an upcoming school event.

The student's father contacted police Tuesday evening. Officers said they observed the student and could see red marks on all sides of their neck.

A TCTC representative said this was the first incident regarding Cornich that they had ever been made aware of.

The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office stated that they will not be filing any charges against Cornich, and they are not looking at the case as an assault charge. They also said that the school will be handling the incident in the future.

The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office made the Ohio Department of Education aware of the alleged incident.
