Austintown Zoning: 'There is no mistake' with new Chick-fil-A design
If you've seen the new Chick-fil-A being constructed on Mahoning Avenue and thought the building appears to be facing backward, you're not alone.
But, Austintown Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli said "there is no mistake."
Crivelli said Chick-fil-A designed the new building with the kitchen in the front, rather than the rear of the building.
The goal of the site design is to "accommodate maximum stacking in the drive-thru lane," said Crivelli, "It was their corporate decision to design it the way they did. It meets all zoning requirements."
For those familiar with Chick-fil-A restaurants, it's not unusual to see a long line of cars stretched through the restaurant's drive-thru lanes. The carry-out is known for their long, but fast-moving lines.
Crivelli said this location will have three lanes around the building. Two drive-thru lanes will hold a total of 48 cars, and there will be enough space for about 20 additional cars to line up outside of the lanes.
"This is absolutely the most detailed plan," he said, "And looks like it'll be the most efficient drive-thru I've ever seen."
The third lane will allow those coming inside the restaurant to enter and exit the parking lot without getting caught up in the drive-thru traffic.
In addition to providing more space for cars to line-up, Crivelli said the restaurant plans to have outdoor seating for 18-22 people. Crivelli notes, "it's more conducive" to have guests seating in the rear of the building, opposed to facing busy Mahoning Avenue.
The construction meets all zoning requirements. Crivelli said he believes once landscaping is in place the location "will look more than presentable."
The new Chik-fil-A location is expected to open in March.
"Once the site is complete and the landscaping put in, I think it will be an asset to the community," he said.
