1997: The Brainard Rivet plant in Girard, where fasteners were made for 46 years, will close at a loss of 70 jobs.
For the second time in 1997, a robber hits the Citizens Banking Co. branch on state Route 9 in New Garden.
The Ohio Department of Insurance rejects the sale of Blue Cross and Blue Shield to the nation's largest hospital chain, Columbia Healthcare Corp., saying it is unfair to policyholders and not in the public interest.
1982: The brakes fail on a Boardman School bus en route to Stambaugh Auditorium causing the bus to ram into the back of another bus on Glenwood Avenue. One 17-year-old student was taken to South Side Hospital.
Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital files suit against the Pennsylvania Department of Health to prevent the state from interfering with the operation of the hospital's new $268,000 CT scanner.
The Rev. John R. Selders, the pastor of Greenford Christian Church for 15 years, is named pastor of Wickliffe Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church in Austintown.
1972: Sandra Churchey, better known to Youngstown burlesque fans as "Busty Russell," is one of three women arrested by Youngstown vice officers led by Sgt. Randall Wellington for nudism at the Palace Theater on Market Street.
Gov. John J. Gilligan withdraws his objection to a state lottery going to a vote of the people. He has opposed a lottery on the grounds that it is a tax on the poor man.
Zayre's opens its newest department store on Rt. 422 near North Road in Niles. Robert D'Alesandro of Youngstown is the manager.
1947: Michael Preskia, 63, a laborer employed in the track department of Charles Shutrump & Sons, dies shortly after being struck by a locomotive near Stop 5 while walking to work with a group of men.
Judge Peter J. Mulholland, Youngstown Municipal Court judge for 20 years, dies of a heart ailment. He was 63.
Warren industries join the effort to try to keep some of Berlin Reservoir's capacity to furnish water for industrial use and to generate electricity. The Army Corps of Engineers wants the reservoir to be kept low for flood control.
