YOUNGSTOWN - The victim of a weekend shooting that happened on Youngstown's south side is expected to survive after one good Samaritan stepped in to care for his wounds while medical professionals arrived.

Police tell 21 News a 38 year old man was shot in the thigh and back while he was driving a silver 2005 Dodge Dakota near the I-680 ramp and South Avenue.

He was able to made it to a nearby gas station, where Tana Parks of Youngstown was able to help him until officers and paramedics arrived.

"This man in a truck pulled up and he's like, 'excuse me, ma'am, I've been shot," Parks told 21 News. "I'm like, 'you're what,' and he's like, "I've been shot.' He opened the door and I could see the blood pulsating out of this thigh."

Parks quickly realized she needed to help the man and quickly applied pressure to his wounds. Parks always hoped to work in the medical field, knowing how to help the victim just minutes after he was shot.

According to a YPD report, the silver Dodge had 9 bullet holes across the driver's side of the truck.

"I grabbed whatever I could to wrap around his thigh," Parks said. "I started checking everywhere else to see if he had any other wounds and I noticed he was shot in the back. I kept apologizing because I felt like I was hurting him trying to lift his thigh and wrap a hoodie around."

Parks assisted the man before medical professionals arrived about 5 minutes later.

"I didn't even look him in the face," Parks said. "All I was worried about what stopping the bleeding and keeping that pressure on."

While she's glad she was able to help him, she said the violence in the city continues to worsen. Parks said she's frustrated turning to guns is becoming more and more common.

"I'm not a hero," Parks said. "I would do what I would expect anybody else to do. I didn't have gloves, I had an open wound on my hand. I did what I needed to do. You put somebody else before yourself."

"She came home safely, we washed up, I cleaned our car out and that was that," said Shawn Yoder, Parks' boyfriend. "I would consider her a hero."

There are no suspects in the case. This investigation is ongoing.
