A former Girard man is headed to prison for firing shots during a police chase in Columbiana County last summer.

According to Columbiana County prosecutor Vito Abruzzino, 40-year-old Aaron Freet, 40, was given a ten-year sentence for a July 1st police pursuit.

Investigators say Perry Township police chased Freet who had escaped from a halfway house in Youngstown.

During the chase, Freet fired shots at the pursuing officer, according to police.

The officer was not harmed and Freet was captured.

Freet was convicted of various felony offenses, including felonious assault, weapons under disability, and other weapons violations.

The Prosecutor’s Office recommended the 10-year prison sentence due to the seriousness of Freet’s conduct and his criminal history.
