Trumbull Animal Welfare League launching Catch Poles for K-9's campaign

VIENNA TWP., Ohio - The Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County (AWL) recently learned of local police departments' needs for catch poles as they deal with dogs in the line of duty, with law enforcement receiving criticism for negative, sometimes fatal outcomes when police encounter dogs on duty.
That's why AWL is working to help assure that both police officers and animals are safe.
"The majority of officers do not want to harm the dogs and in some cases have even taken the bite before they would hurt them," said AWL CEO, Lori Shandor.
"Many times when an officer is called to a home, the animals they encounter are not aggressive animals. They are family pets who are trying to protect their loved ones from an intruder," Shandor added.
Shandor says that catch poles will help officers as they try to safely enter situations like this when an animal is present.
That's why AWL is launching the "Catch Poles for K-9's" campaign. The campaign's goal is to raise $4,000 necessary to supply each police department in Trumbull County with two Ketch-All animal control poles.
These poles will allow officers to restrain a dog while maintaining a safe distance, which will help protect the officers and the dogs.
Anyone interested in contributing to the campaign can mail a check to AWL at PO Box 66, Vienna, OH 44473, make a credit card donation over the phone by calling 330-539-5300 or online by clicking here.
Donors can also stop at the shelter during normal business hours to donate in person.
