Girard’s fire department is thanking a multitude of agencies for helping them put out a scrapyard fire that sent up a tower of smoke that could be seen throughout the Valley on Saturday.

Images of the smoke taken by passersby were sent to 21 News shortly after the fire broke out at around 3 p.m. along Route 422.

The blaze brought a response from 43 fire departments in five counties.

In a post on Facebook, the Girard Fire department is thanking those firefighters as well as efforts by local police, emergency management agencies, dispatchers, Hazmat crews, the state fire marshal, and the Red Cross.

Also being recognized is the Girard Water Department which, in addition to tankers shuttling water to the scene, provided the huge amount of water needed to put out the fire.

“We could not have had a good outcome without their assistance, and we are forever grateful,” according to the post. “We would like to thank not only the departments that responded as mutual aid, but also so many members of our community that provided food, snacks, and water to the countless firefighters involved in the incident.”

Girard firefighters didn’t get much time to relax after the fire.  On Sunday, crews were called out to battle a house fire on Louis Avenue.
