Hubbard community plans pasta dinner for 8 year-old with terminal disease
HUBBARD, Ohio - There's a special pasta dinner coming up to benefit 8-year-old Michael Parteleno, whose been diagnosed with a rare disease that will eventually take his life.
In 2020, Michael's parents received word of the diagnosis for Batten Disease. Batten Disease is extremely rare, occurring in an estimated 2 to 4 of every 100,000 births in the United States.
"Honestly it was a couple days of just walking around in a haze I guess is the only way to explain it. We didn't really know what to do, who to ask, who to talk to," Tammy told 21 News in an interview last year. "It's a horrible disease, it's horrible."
Michael has already lost his eyesight and short term memory.
Over time, the disease will shut down his body, robbing him of speech and mobility, likely causing seizures, dementia and forcing him on a feeding tube. While every case is different, he's only expected to only live 6 to 10 more years.
Organizers of the up coming fundraiser say Michael currently walks with a cane and he has special services at school home to help him.
The Pasta Dinner is hosted by the Hubbard Lions Club. The fundraiser will take place Sunday, My 1st at the Hubbard VFW 710 W. Liberty St.
The price is $10. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and Chinese Auction.
