The Village of McDonald will honor the memory of the community’s only casualty of the Vietnam War.

During a ceremony on Sunday, May 15, a stretch of McDonald Avenue from Marshall Road to Second Street will be designated as the “Dennis Neil Johnston Memorial Boulevard.”

Johnston, a 1966 graduate of McDonald High School, was reported mission in action while serving in Viet Nam at the age of 20 as a Navy Hospitalman with the 3rd Marine Division.

He was officially declared to be killed in action on April 16, 1968 during Operation Scotland at the battle of Khe Sanh.

Seaman Johnston was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Navy Presidential Unit Citation, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross, the Navy Good Conduct Medal, and the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and he is honored on the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The dedication will take place on Sunday at 1:00 PM at the War Memorial in Woodland Park (corner of Fifth Street and Pennsylvania Avenue) during Memorial Day Services.
