Parade and check presented to Hubbard teacher battling cancer

HUBBARD, Ohio - Some touching and emotional moments at Hubbard Elementary School Tuesday.
The entire school paraded through the library in support of Mrs. Donna Mahoney, a teacher who has been battling kidney and adrenal gland cancer.
The kids dropped off cards, flowers and balloons and many were dressed in her favorite color.
"Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the kids to come in wearing red," Mahoney said.
The Hubbard Elementary Parent Association also presented Mahoney with a check of over $14,000.
"I'm just overwhelmed," Mahoney said. "It has taken care of my hospital bills and that in itself is a weight off my shoulders. This is a gift that I never ever expected. The compassion that these children and the teachers and staff let alone, the Hubbard Elementary School Parents Association."
The money was raised through various fundraising campaigns in the month of April. There was a pennies for Mrs. Mahoney campaign where students and staff dug up loose change and donated it. Some students had lemonade stands. The parent association also put on a carnival.
"She has always given to this school, she would do anything for the children, she would give them the shirt off her back," said Heather Kerrington, President of HEPA. "She's been here 26 years and I can say my 4th grader Jacob says she is one of his favorite teachers, he just loves being around her, her personality. Wonderful time to be able to help her and see the kids how much they support her."
"This gift they are giving me and my family is insurmountable, it's just, it's a blessing," Mahoney said.
Mahoney says her health is still slightly precarious, but she has no plans of giving up.
"You have a tumor and a kidney and adrenal removed and nine times out of ten that is all you need but then the other adrenal quit working, the other kidney is very compromised and my numbers aren't good, but I have people praying for me and I'll be here tomorrow," Mahoney said.
