Wandering peacock found on State Route 7 in Columbiana County

The Columbiana County Humane Society is looking for the owner of a Peacock that was found wandering on State Route 7, near Leslie Road.
"He was running up and down the road, passing motorists saw him and they were concerned he was going to get hit on the road," said Humane Agent Erika Rice.
The Peacock was eventually eventually captured with the help of the State Highway Patrol and the Columbiana County Sheriff's Department.
The Humane Society is now trying to find the birds rightful owner, but in the meantime agents are also hoping to find a place to keep the bird temporarily.
Rice said, the dog kennel is too high stress for the bird. So, they hope a local farmer or someone with a proper containment area will volunteer to house the Peacock while they search for its owner.
"Most likely it will not be claimed. A lot of times when Peacocks end up getting lose from their owner, the owners never claim them," said Agent Rice.
She says that's because the birds are often purchased as a novelty, but the owners seldom do proper research.
"So they don't realize that number one: They can fly. So they don't usually have a proper containment for them and they fly away, and they also like to roost in trees and scream. They scream!" said Rice.
Rice also notes that calls for lost and wandering Peacocks are more common than people might think.
"I've had probably 20 Peacock calls in the last year," said Rice.
Under Ohio law, when a livestock animal is found as a stray the animal must be held for at least ten days, while the agency searches for the animals owner and posts in a public location the animal's information. If no one claims the animal in ten days, the animal can be placed up for adoption.
