Thursday marked a significant moment in the stadium upgrades at Mathews Local Schools.

Video posted to the district's Facebook page shows the demolition of the old press box.

Superintendent Russell McQuaide said the elementary students were outside enjoying a field day and had the opportunity to watch as the press box tumbled to the ground. McQuaide said the moment was somewhat symbolic since those students will be the future generation that gets to enjoy the new stadium.

The construction includes new stands that will seat 500 people, press box, lighting, electrical updates and a new sound system. The cost is $792,396.

McQuaid says the original stands were installed in the 1960's and were a gift from the Warren City School district, so they are more than 60 years old.

The stands and equipment presented several safety concerns and it was time for an upgrade.

Construction should be completed by the end of August.
