Loss of Alliance patrolman Joseph Amabeli leaves police department, community in mourning
Joseph Amabeli, a patrolman from the Alliance Police Department, died unexpectedly from a medical issue on Wednesday in Canton, Ohio.
The APD is mourning the loss of their brother in blue.
Scott Griffith, the Alliance police chief, said Amabeli was well-liked and a fantastic police officer.
"Despite only six years of service at APD, [Amabeli] had recently become a field training officer responsible for helping train new recruits. Other FTOs average 12-15 years of service," Griffith said. "He was definitely a rising star in the PD before this tragedy."
In a Facebook post, the APD said of Amabeli, "he was a true friend who was always there when you needed him," and "he was loved by everyone."
The 35-year-old patrolman started at the APD in 2015 as a probationary officer, and he previously worked for Sebring and Smith Township Police Departments.
Amabeli was very active within his community. According to the obituary posted by Gednetz-Ruzek & Brown Funeral Home, he was a "member of the Sebring Village Council, the Sebring Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, a liason for the Patrolman's Union and Field Training Officer."
Visitation will be held from 12-3 p.m., a Masonic Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. and visitation with family present will be held from 5-8 p.m. next Thursday, May 26 at the Gednetz-Ruzek & Brown Funeral Home in Sebring, Ohio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Ann Catholic Church in Sebring, the church Amabeli was a member of, at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 27. There will be a live stream available on the funeral home's website.
Danny's Cans and Shriner's Hospital are accepting memorial contributions in honor of Amabeli.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been created for Amabeli's family.
