Mercer county children raise money to help veterans
On Memorial day we remember those who died in active military service. But for many veterans these days, the numbers of men and women who are taking their own lives after they make it back home is horrifying.
That's why John Dunworth is on a mission.
"Today we are doing a fundraiser for Mission 22, till vVlhalla project that helps veterans with traumatic brain injury, PTSD and depression. 22 veterans a day commit suicide!" said Dunworth.
Mission 22 provides free, long-term programs for Veterans that focus on growth and healing.
John's Young Brothers Tae Kwon Do class performed in front of the National Guard Armory in Hermitage, Monday doing 22 minutes of 22 punches, 22 kicks, 22 push ups and 22 other moves all to bring awareness to the 22 veteran suicides stat.
One of the members of the class is a veteran himself, he he knows all too well the toll PTSD can take.
"It will hit you with no notice. All of a sudden it will just hit you. Sometimes people can't cope with that," said Bill Collins.
That's why students like, Lyndon all got together and raised money for those veteran organizations.
"That is like the little extra something to help them see that they need to stay alive for us," said Lyndon Cain, 10.
So far, a total of over $3400 was raised, all going to help the men and women out there who helped keep us free.
