Ohio sports betting to launch Jan. 1

The Ohio sports betting bill, HB 29, which passed both chambers of the Ohio Legislature in December 2021 and was signed by Gov. Mike DeWine on Dec. 22, now has a launch date.
The Ohio Casino Control Commission met Wednesday to announce that beginning January 1, 2023, betting on all sports betting - retail, online, kiosks, casino and racino - all will launch at one time.
During the virtual meeting, chair of the Ohio Casino Control Commission June Taylor announced the passing of legislature for sports betting in Ohio, and shared details of the timeline for the announced Jan. 1, 2023 start date.
Matt Schuler, Executive Director of the Casino Control Commission, said the Jan. 1 date will allow all licenses to begin on the same date. He noted that while online betting sites will have less start-up time, the date was set so all businesses will be open for business on one start date.
The commission shared the implementation timeline starting today, with all applications made available by the state, with the first application window opening for Type A, B, and C proprietors.
Type A licenses are online sports books, Type B are for retail sports books, including at sporting locations, four casinos and 11 racinos.
Type C licenses are for sports kiosk proprietors, which will operate in restaurants and bars.
Application for type A, and B licenses will close on July 15, and type C licensing opens up for application submission. The deadline to file for a type C license is Aug. 15.
Nov. 2 is the deadline submission date for a responsible gaming plan, facility plans, and house rules. Nov. 2 is also the deadline for all sports gaming employee applications to be recieved by the state.
Dec. 2 is the deadline set for equipment verification by the Ohio Casino Control Commission before the January 1 start date.
