The Mahoning County Democratic Party voted in a new leader as the Party Chair decided not to seek the position.

WFMJ asks what the party's plans are to try and stem the more voters from voting red in upcoming elections.

Christopher Anderson, the next leader of the Mahoning County Democratic Party, says his goal is unity, modernizing communications through social media campaigns, protecting incumbents, building a strong list of democratic candidates,  and running fully coordinated campaigns.

"Job one will be uniting our party and getting us moving in the same direction," said Anderson.

Mike Ray who was nominated chose not to seek the position.

"I'm on city council still, I'm the president of a local non-profit. I serve on a couple of foundations there's only so many hours in the day I was truly honored folks approached me," said Ray.

Joyce Kale-Pesta the current Democratic Party Chair says she will remain an active member of the party, but it was time to step aside.

"You have to have the passion for it and I'm older. It's time to step back and let a younger generation take over," emphasized Kale-Pesta.

The Democratic Party voted Jaladah Aslam Vice Chair of Labor Relations.
"I want to strengthen the relationship between the democratic party and the unions in Mahoning County. It used to be very strong," said Aslam.

In the last presidential election 50.3% voted republican and 48.4% voted democrat. We asked Anderson about strategies to turn a red tide in a county that once voted in a tsunami of blue.

It starts with getting back to basics and reminding folks we're the party that cares about how much your paying for the groceries. We're the party that cares about how much money is in your pocket," said Anderson.
