MAHONING COUNTY, Ohio -
If you're looking to make some extra cash consignment may be the way to go.
Local consignment shops say the number of sellers and shoppers increased as inflation increases.
For the last three weeks Racks Nearly New in Liberty had to turn down new people wanting to consign as there were simply too many folks wanting to sell. However, owner Jane Hummenny will begin accepting new people who want to sell items at consignment tomorrow.
"Usually we would take two to three, and tomorrow we have seven. I would say it's doubled. It doubled or more of how many people are interested in selling," said Hummenny.
She tells 21 news more people have also been shopping for great finds such as special occasion dresses, designer purses, clothing and accessories.
At Raks, an agreement on clothing calls for the owner to get 40% of the sale price, while the owner gets 60%.
Clothing that doesn't sell is donated after 90 days to a church. Purses and furs that don't sell at Raks can be picked up by owners.
Many sellers and shoppers say they can use the extra cash, or they told us it makes sense to save money.
Penny Pinchers in Boardman says it not only has more people wanting to consign, but as inflation increases it has seen more people of all ages interested in finding a treasure perhaps a Lilly Pulitzer, Burberry or Chicos.
"We have a wide age span of shoppers. Where we would only get the forty, fifty and over crowd. Now younger girls, college girls are starting to come in," said Sales Clerk Kate McAllen.
At Penny Pinchers in Boardman the seller gets 40% of sales, and the non-profit receives 60%, which goes to the Silver Lining Cancer Fund. That fund helps cancer patients and their families in our five county area.
It accepts donations during the days the non-profit is open. People wanting to sell through consignment should make an appointment.
If you're looking to make extra cash through consignment, it's important you make an appointment at the consignment shop of your choice.
Read and understand what happens to any items that are not sold and understand the time frame, understand the percent of money you will get and the seller will get if the item sells within 90 days or after. Some sellers reduce pricing of items close to the 90 day selling period.
Check all items such as purses, clothing pockets or item compartments to make sure there are no possessions left inside prior to consignment.
If you have a designer purse there are typically separate agreements regarding designer handbags, and for furs.
