The Cortland City Fire Department is warning residents of a scam call going out to residents of the city.

According to a post on the department's Facebook page, scammers are calling residents requesting money to support the fire department and will request the recipient's credit card number.

Should the recipient refuse to comply with the request, the scammer will then request them to send an envelope of money.

The department is reminding residents that they never ask for fundraising money via phone calls, and anyone who gets a phone call claiming to be from the department asking for money should hang up immediately.
