1997: The owners of the 37-mile Youngstown & Southern Railway file suit against the state and Columbiana County officials, saying they are interfering with the railroad's business. 

Tony Butala, a founding member of the Lettermen and founder of the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Museum in Sharon, says he would like to see a return of music education in classrooms, not just locally but throughout the nation.

The Ohio Nurses Association files a formal complaint with the National Labor Relations Board claiming 10 violations by St. Elizabeth Health Center over the hospital's response to a vote in which the union failed to gain recognition. 

1982: Speedboat rammed the ferry Redwing on Conneaut Lake, killing two young women and injuring 32 people. Passengers included 23 members of the Delta Gamma sorority at Indiana University who were returning to a cottage from the amusement park. 

Mahoning County sheriff's deputies surround a Beaver Township farm and use tear gas to flush out Daniel Ortiz Jr., 23, one of two men who escaped from the Mahoning County Jail   Pennsylvania State Police captured the other escapee, Kenneth R. Gray, 45, in a Donegal bar. 

Area community leaders are hoping the federal government can quickly conclude its investigation into organized crime so that the Mahoning Valley can begin rebuilding its economy and reputation.

1972: The Canfield Police Department moves into its new $65,000 headquarters behind City Hall.

The $35 million Tower Plaza mall complex proposed for downtown Sharon would doom other State Street merchants unless coordinated redevelopment efforts are pursued, a consultant's study warns.

A dean's committee at Pennsylvania State University deadlocks 3-3 on whether to approve teaching credentials for a 21-year-old  student who just graduated and wants to teach.    

1947: Youngstown Mayor Ralph O'Neill finds housing for a paralyzed veteran who was being evicted from his home.

Deer are becoming so numerous in eight counties in Ohio that they have been declared pests and expanded hunting seasons announced. Trumbull, Ashtabula and Columbiana counties are among the eight.

The Eastern Ohio Baptist Association closes its sessions at New Bethel Baptist with the Rev. J.D. Jones was re-elected moderator.
