A new storybook trail has opened at Lake Milton State Park thanks to a partnership between the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio.

Storybook trails create a new opportunity for children and families to promote childhood literacy, develop a love of nature and encourage healthy living.

Ohio First Lady Fran DeWine says it's essential for children to read, as a child's brain is 80% developed by the age of three.

"These storybook trails in our beautiful Ohio parks provide great learning and family bonding time in a beautiful setting," DeWine said.

The storybook trail features the book "Raindrops to Rainbow" written by Ohio University Alumnus John Micklos Jr. Children will walk through the rhyming picture book learning about the colors surrounding them.

The Lake Milton Association donated the trail, and the donation was received through the Ohio State Parks Foundation.

There are currently 119 half-mile storybook trails in various state parks throughout Ohio, each with 16 child-height panels featuring pages from a children's book and activities accompanying the text on the page.

Other storybook trails in the Mahoning Valley can be found at Stevens Park in Niles and Mosquito Lake State Park in Cortland.
