1997: Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins says a grand jury declined to indict a Warren police officer who fatally shot a robbery suspect during a struggle. The Ballet Western Reserve is the first new tenant in the former Elks building, which has been converted into a fine arts center on Boardman Street in downtown Youngstown.
The Cleveland Indians stun the New York Yankees with five runs in the first inning of the American League Division Series game, but the Yankees owned the game from the fourth inning on, winning 8-6.
1982: U.S. Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, remembers the U.S. reaction to the Russian launch of Sputnik 25 years ago. As a 29-year-old Marine, he thought, "We were so technologically superior, we couldn't imagine the Russians doing something of such scientific excellence." Sputnik launched a space race that eventually saw Glenn become the first American to orbit the earth just four years behind Sputnik.
Atty. Don Hanni says he'll file a motion in Mahoning County Probate Court to have Sheriff James A. Traficant Jr. declared mentally unbalanced. Hanni says Traficant's "behavior has been anything but rational, and I've decided to take it upon myself to see that he's examined by a professional."
The body of a 25-year-old woman was removed from a conveyor belt at the Republic Steel Corp. blast furnace in Warren before it was fed into the furnace among iron ore pellets. Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Joseph Sudimack Jr. will issue a ruling in the death.
1972: The Mahoning County Medical Society will mark its 100th birthday with a gift of $30,000 to the Butler Art Institute, the Youngstown Playhouse, and the Youngstown Symphony Society.
Interstate 80S is redesignated Interstate 76 for its entire length, ending confusion in Ohio between I-80 and I-80S.
1947: Slow sales are forcing lower meat prices in the Youngstown district. Ham that had been selling for 73 to 79 cents a pound is down to 63 to 69 cents.
Employees of the Ford Motor Co. reject a pension plan that would have provided them with a pension equal to half their average earnings on retirement.
A.E. McCully, manager of the Youngstown office of the Ohio State Employment Services, says, "the key to success in employing the physically handicapped is proper placement, and that means the physical capacities of the worker are matched with the physical demands of the job.”
