LORDSTOWN, Ohio -  Dairy farming has come a long way since the days of a farmer sitting on a stool while hand-milking Ol’ Bessie. The proof of that is evidenced Trumbull County.

Kibler Dairy Farms LLC, which has been operating on Highland Road outside of Lordstown since 1910 is today operated by Garry Sr, Garry Jr, and Cory Kibler.

Together they milk 322 cows and farm more than 700 acres of corn, alfalfa, and grass for hay.

The Kiblers were recently recognized for their environmental stewardship with a 2022 FARM Excellence Award from the the National Dairy Farmers.

The farm has 480 solar panels installed on the barns. Installed in 2017, the panels produce enough kilowatt hours to power the entire dairy operation.

The farm has also worked to lower their energy usage by installing more than 60 thermostat-controlled fans in their barn, as well as energy efficient lighting.

The parlor is cleaned with water recycled from the process used to cool milk.

Located near several water reservoirs, the Kibler’s farming effort includes the planting of cover crops, and no-till crops where feasible. In addition, the Kibler’s use a drag line manure application to avoid moving heavy tanks over the property which compacts the soil.

Working with the National Resources Conservation Service, the Kiblers are implementing more conservation practices and water quality initiatives on their farm, including construction of a barn that will store a six-month supply of manure.  They are also working on a compost barn, as well as a pollinator habitat area on the farm.

The Kiblers hope that their environmental projects will help to improve the land, the water quality and keep the farm profitable for the next generation.
