NEWBURY, Ohio -  A popular destination for campers in Northeast Ohio is closed until next summer.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has announced that it is closing the campground at Punderson State Park so it can make improvements for future campers.

The camping area will be closed until July 2023 while the electrical system is upgraded.

Although the campground is closed, many day-use areas such as the lodge, cabins, and marina, will remain open to park visitors.

Campsites will be upgraded from 20 amps to 50 amps, making them a better fit for larger, modern RVs and campers.

Most day-use facilities will remain open except the nature center, which is also undergoing a renovation and may open before campground construction is completed.

Boats and kayaks may be launched from the Punderson Marina, which will also remain open during construction. Trails, including disc golf, will be available to park visitors.

The full-service lodge and deluxe vacation cabins remain open.

A natural kettle lake created by a glacier, Punderson Lake is the largest and deepest of its kind in Ohio.
