Hearing to be held December 21 on potential water rate hikes from MVSD

Mahoning Valley - A hearing date has been scheduled to determine whether or not a potential water rate hike for customers in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District (MVSD) will pass.
MVSD Chief Engineer Michael McNinch tells 21 News the hearing is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, December 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas Courthouse.
If two judges vote yes, the rate increase will officially take effect on January 1, 2023.
In early November, MVSD spoke with officials from the Village of McDonald, the City of Niles and the City of Youngstown about these potential increases. McNinch told us these communities were "receptive and understanding" of these rate hikes.
McNinch told 21 News inflation is not the only reason for these rate hikes, as the extra money generated from this hike will be used to fund three capital improvement projects at MVSD including a building for the treatment of the water.
This would be the first rate hike for MVSD since 2012, which was 3% over three years.
